[ARTICLE] Kim Hyun Joong: Pride and Prejudice

Nominations, Nods and Nulls at the 2014 End of Year Artist Awards and Popularity Polls

The past few weeks have been all a flutter at Twitter, Facebook, and Kim Hyun Joong’s fan blogs getting the word out that it is that time of year again:  Artist Award Nominations and Popularity Polls.  I have updated my Support KHJ page with the latest as I have discovered them around the net or had them sent to me by active fans who are itching to vote their hearts out and support Kim Hyun Joong.  Diligent voting and support this year seems even more fervent as we are going into this season right on the heels of a difficult and painful period.  Kim Hyun Joong’s popularity may have seemed to suffer some in South Korea these past few months, but his International fans and his loyal and faithful South Korean fans are going strong and he is still on top in the polls.  Now is the critical time as we tuck in and buckle down, ready for the voting frenzy for the months of November and December 2014.

As I was researching and combing the web to find all the polls running and gather them into one central location at Support KHJ, I was pleased to see him doing so well in some polls and bitterly disappointed to see a glaring absence of his name in others.  He hasn’t been nominated for a MAMA award since 2011, but I was still disappointed to see he was not nominated for anything.  Other veteran musicians like Rain and Big Bang are nominated, so, I know it has nothing to do with the fact that he’s already won an award or has been on the music scene for a while.  His drama Inspiring Generation was not nominated for this year’s Drama Awards for any category either which made me sick.  It was such an amazing drama and his co-stars did a wonderful job as well.  Of course, it could never be proven that the lack of nominations have anything to do with his scandal, but one cannot help but wonder and feel heavy over it.  Once again, I feel he is being ostracized in his own country and I am sick and sad.  He is such an ambassador for South Korea to the rest of the world, and his influence brings them so much profit financially with tourism, and product consumption.  

Just a quick note on fan photo compilations or fan art used on my blog:  I ask permission if I know the artist.  If I don't, I may still use the photo if it was shared on Twitter or Facebook... unless a fan specifically requests their work NOT be re-used.  I saw a fan who did request this on Facebook last week, and I respect her wishes.  I had used one of her photos, and I will not do it again since she requested it.  I just have one thing to say on that matter:  If I use your photo or art, it is because I admire it, and not because I want to copy you or get your credit.  I always leave the original artist's credit in the photo as above.  If I use it in a collage, I try not to cover or erase the original artist's credit.  If you find a photo here that is yours, and you want it removed, I will be happy to do so with sincere apologies and respect.  However, you may want to consider the compliment of having your art used on a fan blog that Kim Hyun Joong has a high possibility of seeing.  Just FYI.  Thank you, Jackie Kim and any others who have given me their direct permission for the use of their art.  I am greatly appreciative.  Komopta!  <3 Angie

Another story I found on Twitter and read the article at a News site mentioned Hyun Joong’s name as one of the Kpop Idols with such star power that the Beauty Products he has endorsed have enjoyed a marked increase in International Sales.  I know that has to be true because I would have never known about or purchased any South Korean Beauty products had it not been for his endorsements.    I have purchased products for The Body Shop, Tony Moly and Skinfood.  He did not endorse Skinfood, but I would never have known it existed unless I was shopping for the other companies he did endorse.  South Korean companies should be singing his praises as well as the Tourism Department.  I am ANGRY quite honestly that he has always been so lightly dismissed by his own.  It is painful for me that he has to receive the love and support he deserves only from his most loyal fans.  He should be getting Public Accolades from Industry Professionals and Peers as well.  I know in his private relationships in the Industry, he does receive those affirmations.  It just makes me see red that he has always seemed to suffer the criticism of the South Korean public and his awards come mostly from popularity votes from his fans who are mostly from outside South Korea.

That being said, I am frustrated when I find his songs on South Korean Music apps such as Melon and am told it is not supported for my country, or want to vote in a popularity award running such as Baeksang Awards and am told the app does not support my country or go to a site that is completely in Korean and in a picture type format that does not translate visibly on Google Translate and have no idea how to sign up and vote.  It makes me feel like the International Fans are discriminated against, seriously!  I don’t know of many American Awards that are based on popularity besides perhaps the MTV awards or something like that.  I have never voted in popularity polls for American Artists!  Kind of humorous, I suppose… but, I wonder if it is the same for International Fans of American Artists?  I know the itunes downloads are used for some types of records to determine whether a song is silver, gold, platinum etc. the same way cd and album sales used to determine those.  Now that we are a digital age, it is necessary to include mp3 downloads to determine the popularity of a song or album. 

For Hyun Joong, I always buy my CDs at Yesasia.com because they count in the Japanese Oricon charts.  As I was saying, however, I have found that purchasing digital downloads that count toward Korean Charts has proven frustratingly difficult if not impossible for me in the USA.  It makes me feel like I cannot help and support him where he needs it most:  the South Korean Entertainment World.  It is his standings in that world that allow him to make more dramas specifically.  He will always be able to make music and release it in Japan.  His fan base there is plenty strong enough to give him lucrative record contracts.  It is the drama standings that I worry about most, and Inspiring Generation did not get the nominations it deserved for the 2014 Korean Drama Awards in my opinion.  I am bitterly disappointed.  I am happy his hyung Kim Jaejoong received an award for Triangle.  He did an excellent job, but I can’t help feeling that there is a glaring hole where the awards should have been piling up for Kim Hyun Joong and his co-stars, directors, costume designers and fellow staff on Inspiring Generation.  Whether or not this has anything to do with his scandal, we will never really know.  Regardless, it is difficult not to feel the ache of fresh scars in my heart when seeing the lack of recognition.

Ok, I can breathe a little easier now that I have voiced my frustrations over this.  Let’s move on to a topic that will give us back the smiles we have come to treasure with our memories of Kim Hyun Joong’s many Awards from the past 4 years and his appearances at Award Ceremonies.  The first I want to mention is the memory I cherish most as it was the first time I saw him performing Breakdown Live.   Kim Hyun Joong fans will never forget the MNET 20’S Choice awards in 2010 performing Breakdown with Artmatic!   Sexy, Sexy dancing in the water shirtless on stage.  I was blown away by my ‘flower boy’ and his new HOT manly image.  I specifically remember the push ups he did where he was clapping his hands in between each one.  OMO!  I was so shocked and excited.  He was just SO SEXY!  Although I don’t see him in a sexual way as he is more like a younger brother in my heart, I have to admit the rush of adrenaline seeing him looking so hot and manly.  Next memory would be his 2011 win at MAMA.  This  was only about a month after Breakdown, and he gave us a completely new memory with blonde hair and a sweeter style performing  ‘Lucky Guy’ on the stage and taking the Best Male Artrst Award.  Also, for the ‘Lucky Guy’ video,  KHJ won the Creator’s Factory Best Actor Award At the 2013 Okinawa Movie Festival.    Every time he has won an award, my heart has filled up with pride and I literally puff up my chest and a huge smile splits open my face!  He is truly like family to me in that his victories make me SO PROUD!  I could brag about my Kim Hyun Joong all day long!

HA HA HA!!!  Thank you to the fans who compiled these!  Hyun Joong loves OnePiece, and we all think he should play the lead role in a drama!  LOL!  So Cute!

I have had many requests via e-mail and in my comment box at Support KHJ on how to vote and how to see current standings at the various polls.  I appreciate all the fans who want to help Hyun Joong.  I will do my best to update that page this week.  I am struggling right now to even take care of my basic every day duties due to my failing health.  I would appreciate all your prayers as for the next 120 days I will be preparing mentally, emotionally, and physically for a life changing surgery I will be receiving sometime in the early Spring.  It will be after much hard work and effort that I hope to have the health I want to enjoy all of the things I want to accomplish with the gifts God has given me.  I appreciate the concern and friendship from my fellow fans, and believe me, I would not have come to this decision without the renewed faith I have in the beauty and love people are capable of sharing due to my experience with all of you and Kim Hyun Joong.  His fans are truly as beautiful and kind as he is.  I am so blessed to have found him and been a part of this Alien Family I have discovered here.  Thank you all so much!


I must apologize to my readers and my Hyun Joongie for being so sick during this crucial time!  I tend to get very tired around this time of year, and my exhaustion prevents me from doing many things I want to do.  I have only enough energy to work for my paycheck which is not optional.  Sometimes, I’m not even strong enough for that and my job becomes jeapordized as well.  I know I made promises to post the standings on my support KHJ page and to vote diligently each day.  Because of my health it has not been possible.  So, I want to thank each one of you for working so hard to keep his name on top of the polls and give him the opportunity to proudly accept the awards he deserves!  I am still recovering, and just writing this last paragraph is taxing all of my energy.  It took me two weeks just to complete this article, I am very sorry!  I have done my best to post quick little updates on Twitter and Facebook and even stayed up all night to update the Support KHJ page last weekend.  I know some of you have some questions on how to vote and such things.  I will do my best to address those when I can.  I am so sorry I am not healthy!  Please help each other as much as possible and for information go to Lazer Kim’s blog or Hyunnies Pexers.  They are the best.  As I have energy, I will update my page for you.  I hope it is enough for now that all the links are gathered in one place.  I am so proud of all of you for all you do for Hyun Joong!  Thank you for your hard effort.  Keep fighting!  He will receive all of the recognition and love he deserves because you all take such good care of him!  Thank you so much!
